They Took Our Jobs -- The FOSS Edition

This comes up from time to time: Free and Open Source Software takes our jobs.  And we should "do something" about it.  Including "work together to increase the value of our hard-earned knowledge" -- whatever that might mean.

IDE Joys

I use Komodo Edit for writing Python -- and find it very useful.  It only lacks one thing -- autocompletion.   What I've found is something better than autocompletion: the Python interactive shell.  The >>> prompt rules.

Oracle to buy Sun.  Everybody Panic!

Oracle is turning into Computer Associates -- a holding company that feels like a kind of technology graveyard.  I don't see how this is good for Java or MySQL.

Pending Move

Apple is (after many years) turning off the web-based editor for my home pages.  Effect on me?  Get my buns in gear to move my content (again).

QA, Testing and Testers

I saw a very thought-provoking question on StackOverflow about QA and testing.  Thought-provoking because it reflects a limiting view of QA.

XML's not abstract enough.  Let's use XLIFF to encode XML to encode our document.

XLIFF is handy.  But when every <group> has an extension data type, something's gone amiss.

Project Euler

What a time-sink.  Too much of the wrong kind of fun.

Reaching level one was pretty easy.  I was baffled by one problem.  Level two will probably be harder.

What is the right level of coverage?  100% Logic Paths?  100% Code?

Python Business Rules Engine

Several questions on Stack Overflow indicate a fundamental confusion about dynamic languages like Python.  It's strange how people try make things way more complex than necessary.

Larry O'Brien's Windows and .NET watch (in the SD Times) focuses on Python.  Not sure if it's a good thing or a bad thing.

The Future of Windows -- And the Future WIthout WIndows

The reason for Windows used to be MS-Office.  Now, the reason for Windows is Windows.  Large parts of Corporate IT can't afford to do anything other than pay Microsoft whatever it wants.  With the failure of Vista, those days may be winding to a close.
