These are the search engines I use for locating resources on the Web.
Yes, there are dozens (hundreds?) of others. Once, I used Yahoo’s World_Wide_Web to locate the other search engines. Look at Yahoo’s Search_Engines_and_Directories for the current list.
This page was originally written in ‘02. That’s when I redid these pages to include change history. Clearly, the original information was from ‘98 or so.
Note the absence of Google. Now, they’re search and portal.
Altavista. Originally developed by Digital. Later, Digital got bought by Compaq. Compaq got bought by HP. Now, the Altavista is owned by Yahoo!. I think Babel Fish technology became part of Google. What a long strange road.
Netscape Search. For a while, they were the anti-Microsoft powerhouse, giving away an advanced browser that exploited features of their advanced server. Then they struggled because Internet Explorer was too tightly wrapped into Windows. Then they folded up the browser business to focus on the server business. Then they became a brand-name, owned by AOL. AOL was once so highly valued that they could buy Time Warner. Now AOL/Netscape is a kind of backwater. Yes, people use it, but no, it isn’t an economic powerhouse.
